BOSHERSTON LAKES
3 flooded limestone valleys best known for their covering carpet of lilies,
which are at their best in June. A footpath winds its way around the banks
to the spectacular beach at Broad Haven South. The ponds also offer good
course fishing and are well stocked.

BRO MEIGAN GARDENS
Bro Meigan offers 6.5 acres of beautiful gardens with uninterupted views
of the Preseli Hills. This peaceful haven will appeal to those who apprciate

The traditional Tea Room is set in a converted 300 year old barn and serves

CALDEY ISLAND
Caldey Abbey is the home of Cistercian Monks who farm this tiny island off the coast of Tenby and make the famous Caldey Island perfume and chocolate. Regular boat trips leave from Tenby Harbour. There is also a medieval priory, lighthouse, post office/museum, gift shop and tea garden - as well as a glorious sandy beach, pleasant walks and spectacular views. Crossings subject to weather conditions.

CARREG SAMSON
A fine example of a cromlech, an exposed Neolithic burial chamber. Legend
has it that St Samson placed the capstone in position using only his little
finger.

CAREW CASTLE & TIDAL MILL
An enormous stone castle in a picturesque location next to the mill pond, which powers the tide mill. The castle is ruined now, but was once a powerful stronghold and a grand Elizabethan mansion.
History
The first fortification on the site was an Iron Age fort with 5 ditches.
An earth and timber castle that was built here by the Norman Gerald of Windsor
around 1100. He was given the site of Carew Castle in a dowry when he married
Nest, the most beautiful woman on Wales.
Owain ap Cadwgan, son of a Welsh Prince, was so overwhelmed by Nest's beauty
that one night in 1109 he is said to have scaled the walls of Carew Castle
and captured her.
6 years later, Gerald Killed Owain in battle and retrieved his wife, along
with two new children.
When Gerald died the following year. Nest then married Stephen, Castellan
of Cardigan and had yet more children by him.
A stone structure probably stood in its place in 1212, when for some reason,
King John seized it for a short time when passing through Pembrokeshire
on his Irish expedition.
The castle remained in the hands of the Carew family who built the strong
medieval castle that stands today.
In about 1480, Sir Edmund Carew disposed of it to Rhys ap Thomas who set
about converting it into a home worthy of an influential Tudor gentleman.
The castle was granted to Sir John Perrot, by Queen Mary, in 1558 after
the downfall of Rhys ap Thomas's grandson, who was executed for treason.
Sir John converted the castle into an Edwardian mansion but was himself
convicted of treason in 1592 and died (of natural causes) in the Tower.
The castle was abandoned about 1686.
It is now owned and run by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
Features
Entrance is via a gatehouse into a small inner ward, facing the east wall
of the castle.
This east aspect has two 13th century towers and the rounded end of the
Elizabethan wing lies beyond on the north corner.
The magnificent north wing was the last major addition to the castle, overlooking
the mill pond.
The skeleton of the large glazed windows, installed at this time, are in
stark contrast to narrow arrow slits & tiny windows on more defence
orientated castles such as Pembroke.
Inside the keep, there are plenty of rooms, stairs and passages to explore.
A working tide mill is adjacent to the castle and is included in the admission
charge. A mill of some kind existed here as early as 1542, although the
present building probably dates from the early 19th century.
Next to the car park is an intricately carved Celtic Cross.
It is well known as a haunted castle, including a ghostly ape.

CASTELL HENLLYS IRON AGE HILLFORT
A reconstructed Iron Age hillfort. Findings from excavations carried out on the site have enabled the National Park Authority to realistically reproduce life as it was 2000 years ago. Traditional craft making and ancient breeds of animals can also be found on site. The site is now open over the winter months at a reduced level of entry.

COLBY WOODLAND GARDENS

THE NATIONAL CORACLE CENTRE
Coracles from all over Britain and abroad are displayed. There is also
a coracle workshop and Shop. Admission to the coracle centre also includes
the restored flour mill which occupies a dramatic location above Cenarth

LLYS Y FRAN RESERVOIR & COUNTRY PARK
The reservoir is the focal point of the Country Park which has pay &
display car parks on either side of the dam wall. Picnic sites, visitor

PEMBROKE CASTLE
An enormous oval castle, mostly surrounded by a serene mill pond. Extensively restored in Victorian times, it's dominated by the complex gatehouse on the outside and the huge circular keep once you're inside. The walled town of Pembroke grew up around the castle also contains many ancient and interesting Norman buildings.
History
Established by Roger Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury in 1093 as a timber
structure.
The first stone structure was erected by William Marshal after he became
Earl of Pembroke in 1189.
His third son, Gilbert, was responsible for enlarging and strengthening
the castle between 1234 and 1241.
The castle then passed into the hands of William de Valence, a half-brother
of Henry III through his marriage to Joan, granddaughter of William Marshal.
Valence family held the castle for 70 years, strengthening it by building
the walls and towers around the outer ward. They also fortified the town,
creating a ring of walls with three main gates and a postern.
On the death of Aymer, William de Valence's son, the castle passed through
marriage into the hands of the Hastings family.
In 1389, The Castle reverted to Richard II. It was granted out in a series
of short tenancies and began to fall into disrepair.
In 1400, The Castle was attacked by Owain Glyndwr, but escaped a siege because
the Constable at the time, Francis ? Court, bought off Glydwr with the Welsh
equivalent of danegeld.
Eventually Pembroke Castle passed into the hands of a new Earl, Henry VI's
half-brother Jasper Tewdwr. He was the first to make it more of a home than
a fortress.
In 1457 Henry Tewdwr was born in The Castle. He later defeated Richard III
at the Battle of Bosworth Field to became the first monarch of the Tudor
dynasty, Henry VII.
In 1648, Cromwell laid siege to The Castle during The English Civil War.
Pembroke Castle remained an ivy-covered ruin until 1880 when a Mr J R Cobb
of Brecon spent three years restoring what he could.
Nothing further was done until Major-General Sir Ivor Phillips of Cosheston
Hall acquired the ruins in 1928 and started an extensive restoration of
the castle, restoring the walls and towers as nearly as possible to their
original appearance.

PENTRE IFAN BURIAL CHAMBER
Set in the heart of Bluestone Country, where the 'Spotted Dolerite' came from which made the inner sanctum of Stonehenge. A fine example of a cromlech with a 15 ton capstone intact. Dramatic against sunrise or sunset.

ST DAVIDS BISHOPS PALACE
The remains of the Bishops of St Davids principle palace are located alongside The Cathedral in the tranquil valley of the river Alun. This would have been the finest collection of buildings in Wales during the medieval period.
History
The original monastery was established here by St David in the sixth century.
It was attacked and ransacked at least 10 times by Norse raiders over the
next 400 years.
When the Normans arrived in Pembrokeshire in the 11th century, they took
over the Cathedral and appointed a Norman Bishop.
Realising how vulnerable the Cathedral was, they first built a motte and
bailey fort, which they abandoned.
They then built a stone defensive wall around all the Cathedral buildings,
including the Palace.
Thomas Bek (1280-93) began a program of new building. He was responsible
for the chapel in the southwest corner, the hall and the private apartments,
and the gate.
Bishop Henry de Gower (1328-47). In addition to major works in the cathedral
itself, built the Great Hall, complete with wheel window in the east gable,
the distinctive arcaded parapet and the majestic porch.
Later bishops made further additions and alterations to the palace, but
with the Reformation they fell into disrepair and ruin.
Features
Much of the town wall remains, particularly on the south side.
The main gate into the Cathedral compound, Porth y Twr, the main entrance
from the city, is intact and holds a small historical exhibition. (St Davids
is the smallest city in Britain).
Inside the palace, much of the structure remains, albeit roofless.
The main features are the arcaded parapets, great hall and wheel window.

The Cathedral built in 1181 is on the site reputed to be that on which
St David founded a monastic settlement in the 6th Century. The magnificent
ceilings - oak in the Nave, painted in the Quire and Presbytery - and the
sloping floor contribute to this most special place. This year a splendid
new refectory will open offering fresh local food.

RSPB-RAMSEY ISLAND
This dramatic island is 1 mile off St Davids Coast. Spectacular high cliffs
