A. Calibrated Tube. B. Base Water reservoir C. Slurry Container. D. Reagent Container.
E. Reagent stopper F. Slurry Container Stopper. G. Water Level Mark. H. Reagent level mark.

How to use it

  1. Fill the base of the instrument with water by pouring it through the calibrated tube, until it reaches the thick black zero mark.
  2. Pour 100ccs of slurry into the jug provided and thence into the larger vessel. Add a further 200ccs of water, and replace the stopper, making sure that it is gas tight, by giving it a twist.
  3. Pour 150ccs of reagent into the smaller bottle [up to the mark indicated] replace the stopper, twisting it slightly to make sure that there is a gas tight fit. Invert the bottle so that the reagent will flow into the larger bottle containing the slurry and water.
  4. Shake and allow the solution to stand, but give it a shake after about a minute, and again at two minutes, by which time the reaction should be complete, and the quantity of nitrogen contained in the slurry can be read off the calibrated tube.

The quantity of Nitrogen is expressed in terms of available Ammonium Nitrogen in kgs per m³. ( i.e. if you analyse ammonium nitrate with the Quantofix, it will only tell you how much ammoniacal N there is, it will not quantify the nitrate N)

If you multiply this figure by 9 the quantity is expressed in units per 1000 gallons e.g.1.5 kg per m³ x 9 = 13.5 units per 1000 gallons.

Standards Used: kgs/m³
Undiluted Cow Slurry 1.5-2
Pig Slurry 4.0
Poultry 9.0
Dirty water range 0-1
